Childbirth Education

Birth. Until you’ve been through it, it’s often a mystery. It’s not likely you’ve been invited to take part in many births. I mean, chances are you’ve seen birth in movies or TV, but in most mainstream media, the way birth is shown is simply inaccurate. And if birth is a mystery, the postpartum period is an enigma. Expectant folks have expectations of what this time will look like, and even if they’ve experienced it before, often these expectations simply do not match reality.

Childbirth education and prenatal classes can take some of the mystery out of birth and postpartum.  Learning about the process and increasing your knowledge can take the fear and anxiety out of birth which decreases the pain and increases your ability to ask for what you need. Learning about realistic expectations for the postpartum period can significantly reduce your risk for postpartum mental health issues and can increase your chances of experiencing a more positive postpartum period.

These classes are private and in your own home for your comfort. I come to you! We spend a few hours together and you come away with knowledge of your options and confidence in the birth process and in the postpartum period. As Diana Korte and Roberta Scaer, authors of A Good Birth, A Safe Birth, said: “If you don’t know your options, you don’t have any.”

If you would prefer to learn in a small group environment in your home (2-3 couples), please ask!
Prenatal Classes will cover:

  • • The mind/body connection in labour
  • • Stages and phases of labour and how to get through each one
  • • Pushing – how to get that baby out

  • • When to arrive at the hospital or place of birth
